How to end task on the items that are running in the background

Information:

By closing running programs may help prevent applications from conflicting with each other. Also, it will free up memory and system resources. However, closing programs using the steps below will not remove them from Windows or from your hard disk.

You can use the following instructions for closing all your running applications.

Close Running Programs—Detailed Steps for Windows 95, 98 and Me:

1. Hold down the CTRL and ALT keys, and while holding them down, tap the DEL key once. The 'Close Programs' dialog box appears.
2. Select a program to remove by clicking on it.
3. Click 'End Task'. The 'Close Programs' dialog box will close and also, the program you selected will close.

Repeat steps 1-3, closing all running programs except Explorer and Systray. For Windows to function properly, you should leave both Explorer and Systray running.

Note: If you accidentally press the CTRL+ALT+DEL combination twice, the system will reboot. If this happens, simply wait until your desktop reappears and begin again with Step 1.

Close Running Programs—Detailed Steps for Windows NT, 2000 and XP:

1. Hold down the CTRL and ALT keys, and while holding them down, tap the DEL key once. Select Task Manager.
2. Select programs listed in the applications tab to close.
3. Click 'End Task'. The task manager dialog box will remain open close allowing you to close multiple applications.
4. Move to the processes tab and Select processes listed to close.
5. Click 'End Task'. The task manager dialog box will remain open close allowing you to close multiple processes.

Many processes on the processes tab are system processes that can not be closed for Windows to function properly. It is only recommended to close processes that are recognized as a non system process. Some processed can be determined non system dependent processed by searching for the process listed and check it's location. If the location is not within a windows system location, it might be a process that can be closed.

Note: Once the system is restarted these processes will be relaunched if they are required for the system to function properly.

Removing Startup Items:

An alternate method of closing these processes permanently or semi-permanently is to disable items in the msconfig utility and restart the system. (This utility is not available on all operating systems. It is available on Windows 98, ME, and XP.)

Note: You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group in to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from completing this procedure.

1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the Load Startup Items check boxes.
3. Click OK, and then click Restart to restart your computer.

Note: Look closely at the General tab to make sure that the check boxes that you cleared are still cleared.

How to Return from a Clean Boot State:

1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. On the General tab, click Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services.
3. Click OK. Click Restart when you are prompted to restart your computer.

How many computers can I install Dragon on?

For consumer editions of Dragon speech recognition, like our Dictate Edition, we grant one license of the software. This means you can install Dragon on one computer located at one physical address. We also allow you to install this one copy on a secondary computer for back-up purposes.

For the latest editions of Dragon speech recognition, specifically Dragon for Mac , the license is per user (not per machine). A licensed speaker is permitted to create and use multiple voice profiles, and these voice profiles can be stored on one or more computers.

A separate license, however, must be purchased for each additional speaker whose voice profile or voice profiles is or are being used by the software.
